The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station hosts research station tours for the public every summer

Each station, part of South Dakota State University and supporting programs in several colleges and SDSU Extension, will be the site of field days with guided tours and presentations showcasing research being conducted there. These tours are led by SDSU research and Extension staff. 

The West River Research Farm field day will be held Tuesday, June 18, from 4-7 p.m. The station is located at 13370 Alkali Road, Sturgis. 

The Cottonwood Field Station field days will be held over the course of the summer with events taking place on the following dates: 

  • June 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, focusing on virtual fencing in practice. A meal will be provided. 
  • July 29 from 9 a.m. to noon, focusing on rangeland monitoring. Refreshments will be provided. 
  • Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon, with discussion on drones and their use in livestock production. Refreshments will be provided. 

Participants are encouraged but not required to attend all sessions. The Cottonwood Field Station is located at 23738 Fairview Road, Philip. 

Dakota Lakes Research Farm field day will be Thursday, June 27, from 3 p.m. to dusk. The farm is located at 21310 308th Ave., 17 miles east of Pierre on Highway 34. 

The Southeast Research Farm field day is Tuesday, July 9, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. The station is located at 29974 University Road, Beresford. 

The Northeast Research Farm field day will be Thursday, July 11, from 4 p.m. until dusk. The farm is located at 15710 455th Ave., South Shore, 2.5 miles west of Interstate 29 off exit 193. 

The Oak Lake Field Station will be featured in its first field day Thursday, July 18, from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. with coffee and lunch being provided. The station is located at 19862 483rd Ave., Astoria. 

There is no cost to attend these events. An Eventbrite registration link will be posted prior to each field day to ensure a more accurate count of attendees.
